Jacqui Doran

After emigrating from England to Australia in 1993, Jacqui Doran now resides near Byron Bay on the north coast of NSW surrounded by dogs, birds, plants & kids. Jacqui has been painting & exhibiting for the past 16 years showing work in Byron Bay, Brisbane & Art Galleries Schubert on the Gold Coast and has just completed a successful show at Art Melbourne in 2010.

"Dogs have a fundamental essence that is larger than them. They love just as much as they play. I paint dogs to give them a face – an iconic image to be admired. I want to reflect a dog’s personality, a sense of humbleness – a painting that allows the viewer to engage with the dog world. I want to make them real and forever present in our lives, to honour them and their existence. I love to paint character dogs – always attracted to the ‘tough looking ones’. They love unconditionally – they are your friends eternally. They understand when you are sick – they stay by your side – they protect you – they bring joy and happiness and provide comfort and friendship. Where would we be without our loyal companions? And it is kind of funny that dog is spelt GOD backwards – is this just a coincidence?

A friend commented when my dog died that we grieve openly for friends and loved ones that at times in our lives we very rarely see – yet our dogs are by our side always and when they go we are just suppose to get on with it – people would say “it’s only a dog after all!!” We lost our dog in June and the sense of loss was so immense that my children, partner & I still feel so lonely without him. I buried him in the garden and put up portraits of him in both the lounge and the children’s room – so he will always be remembered and a part of our family. This has really helped all of us immensely - as we can still see him and talk about him openly – he is still in our lives.

I have been painting & drawing my own dogs since 1985 and making dog sculptures since 1995. It is over the past 5 years however that I have embraced dog portrait painting – fascinated by the life and emotion that each dog presents." - Jacqui Doran
