In my practice I am responding to the primary motifs as real, gradually enticing life, light and movement into the work; endeavouring to keep the work open and spontaneous as long as possible. I have continued to work with this approach in my paintings of Wild Dogs, Bulls, Horses and other symbols of primal power or presence.
Recent journeys to Italy and the Kimberly’s are influencing my practice. The richness of our western visual history blended with the raw power and light of the primal vibration of the outback reinforce the authenticity of the works.
These paintings are direct and engage the viewer. They are decorative, individual, scarred and possess a physical confidence.
These works address issues of freedom and presence.
Animal totems aid in self-discovery and capture our imagination; giving us incredible avenues of self-expression and awareness which can afford us visions of how our lives could be if we lived more simply.
My compositions are designed to create tension and rhythm. My colour schemes have a symbolic language: earth colours represent the elements while the primaries and there varied tones represent light and its spectrum. A mixture of surface finishes and linear marks create a variety of visual stimulation. The formal qualities I use aim to effect the viewer; to make them feel they are in the presence of something human, something authentic and something very rare.
