Micaela Nunez

Born in Punta del Esta, Uraguay, where she grew up between the lighthouse and the harbor, she found in painting the way to always return to the maritime world of her childhood. Acclaimed as the top nautical painter of the Rio de la Plata, her magnificent pieces go beyond frontiers: even the king and queen of Malaysia purchased one of her creations.

A self taught artist, Nunez began painting as a child, never imagining she would become a professional artist. It wasn't until she moved to Argentina with her mother in the 1980's that she begain studying interior architecture at the Women's Library, and undertaking art workshops at the Teatro San Martin where she became known as "the girl of the yachts". After receiving first prize at the Maritime Painting Salon shortly after, Nunez decided to devote herself completely to nautical sport.

Artist Comments:

"When I began I had to learn everything about boats: to look at them, to see how they move."

"There's a time, when I'm painting, when I forget that it's a boat and I work on everything that is artistic and colour. It's not until I abstract myself from the work that I can see it again as a boat."

"Each work, each boat and every story of a picture, it's me, where I was born and the story of my life. Perhaps in another life I was a pirate..."

Over the years, the works of Micaela Nunez have crossed the ocean. To such a point that she has participated in exhibitions in the Netherlands, Italy, France, USA and Brazil, and divides her work between Uraguay and Argentina. Her boats have also reached as far as the Museum of the End of the World, in Ushuaia, where she has a room as a contemporary seascape painter along with great maritime painters in that city's Maritime Museum. Moreover, she is a member of the International Society of Marine Painters and was granted membership for excellence in maritime painting.
